University of Coimbra
Founded in 1290 by King Dinis in Lisbon, it is definitively fixed in Coimbra in 1537 by order of King John III (after having existed between Lisbon and Coimbra).
In 2013, the University of Coimbra (together with Alta and Rua da Sofia) will receive the distinction of World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
The University of Coimbra is the oldest Portuguese university (one of the oldest in the world) for centuries it was the only university in Portugal.
All the Faculties of the University have been installed in the Royal Palace of the Acazaba. In 1597 the University of Coimbra bought the Palace of the Alcazaba (from King Filipe I), which was then called the Palace of Schools - being considered the historical centre of the University and the city of Coimbra.
In the imposing Great Hall - better known as the Sala dos Capelos - the main academic ceremonies are held, namely the solemn opening of the Lessons and the doctoral examinations of this University.
In the Weapons Room you will be able to contemplate the weapons of the extinct Academic Royal Guard, who guarded the University spaces.
