Coimbra's University Tower
The University Tower, located at the entrance of the General Studies, is since its construction (18th century) an icon of the city of Coimbra. Has about 34 meters high (with 180 steps) and offers a fascinating and surprising panoramic view over the city of Coimbra.
The clock (19th century) and the bells, elements that are still part of the academic life today, stand out.
There are three bells: to the east is the largest, the balloon, dating from 1561; to the west is the goat, installed in 1741 and rebuilt in 1900; to the north is the he-goat, dating from 1824.
The goat - the original bell - is on display at the Academic Museum (as it was stolen several times while in the Tower).
In the present, as in the past, "the bells also summon the academic community for the solemn acts performed in the Great Hall, in the same way that they bend in a funeral tone for the death of a teacher".
The Tower is one of the must-visit places in the University of Coimbra.
