The Old Cathedral of Coimbra is one of the most important Romanesque Roman Catholic sites in Portugal. Its construction began some time after the Battle of Ourique (1139), a time when Prince Afonso Henriques declared himself King of Portugal and chose Coimbra as the capital.

The Old Cathedral of Coimbra is the only Portuguese Romanesque cathedral that survived the Reconquest times and remained intact until today.

From the outside, the cathedral looks like a small fortress, which is a common characteristic of the cathedrals from the times of the Reconquest. Despite its robust look, the cathedral invites you to discover its beautiful three naves, along with the impressive cloisters and chapels that make up this religious complex.
