St. John | São João
In June, the city of Porto receives the famous feasts of St. John.
The feasts of St. John in Porto were originally a pagan festival, originating from the summer solstice where people celebrated fertility, associated with harvests and abundance. Later, the Church Christianized this feast, where it attributes St. John as patron of the festivities.
The tradition also includes the popular stingrays scattered throughout the city, the fires spread over the more traditional neighborhoods, mangeric pots with popular verses, and the exuberant fireworks on the waterfront.
At these festivals arise the famous "leeks" used to hit people's heads, the branches of lemon balm that women put on the faces of the men that circulate there.
