Praia do Norte (northern beach)
Known for its great waves, perfect and incredible, the NorthBeach is under the influence of the phenomenon "cannon of Nazareth".
This is a rare geomorphological accident, the largest inEurope and one of the largest in the world, which consists ofa plaque failure 170 kilometres long and five kilometres deep.
The "Cannon of Nazareth" channels the ripple of the Atlantic Ocean to the North Beach, virtually without obstacles, providing the Creation of waves with an out-of-normal size compared to the rest of the Portuguese coast.
One of these waves, about 30 meters high, surfed byHawaiian Garrett McNamara in November 2011, was awarded with the "Biggest wave of 2011" award under the Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards.
has no surveillance and has a harsh and somewhat wild environment, with dunes that preserve the original vegetation. The sea, brave and dangerous for swimming or bathing, is much appreciated by surfers who find spectacular waves here.
