In the 16th century, there was one of the churches of Béjar in this place, which became a school, and later as a town hall. It was the church of Béjar. Only in 1980 is inaugurated the current Museum in homage to the great sculptor Bejarano, Mateo Hernández, known worldwide.  

 

In this space are found about half a hundred pieces made at the time he was in Paris (1913) where he excelled by his works, and where he always lived until his death, in 1949. 

 

During his first years in Paris, his works were exclusively animalistic, dedicated to the representation, in real size, of animal figures, the vast majority carved directly on stones of great hardness.

Only in 1921, it begins to include pieces based on the human model, where stands out the magnificent sculpture of "La Bañista".  

 

Considered one of the best animalistic sculptors of the 20th century, was awarded on several occasions and his pieces traveled around the world in several temporary exhibitions, having achieved such interest internationally, that some of his pieces are currently exhibited in Museums of world renown, as the Metropolitan Museum, in New York, where you can see the Black Panther, one of the most famous works of this sculptor.
