Batalha Monastery
This Dominican monastery was built by D. João I in gratitude to the Virgin Mary for the victory over the Spanish in the Battle of Aljubarrota.
Considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it features late Gothic Portuguese architecture, or Manueline style.
Of the initial project, the church, the cloister and the monastic facilities stand out, namely the Chapter Room, the Sacristy and the Refectory. These dependencies bear some similarities to the construction of the Alcobaça Monastery.
The Monastery was restored in the 19th century, under the direction of Luís Mouzinho de Albuquerque. In this restoration, the Monastery underwent more or less profound changes, namely the destruction of two cloisters, near the Imperfect Chapels.
With the extinction of religious orders in Portugal, there is an attempt to completely remove religious symbols, seeking to make the Monastery a glorious symbol of the Dynasty of Avis.
