Founded in the Roman period, Idanha-a-Velha presents itself as an "open-air museum", that occupies an inescapable place in the context of the country's archaeological stations.

This remarkable architectural and archaeological ensemble is classified as a national monument and integrates the network of historical villages of Portugal.

It comprises several spaces integrated in an urban circuit, where stands out the Cathedral, the Tower of the Templars, the Lagar de Varas, the Epigraphic Pavilion and the contemporary architecture of the recovery interventions that have occurred over the last decade. Probably dated from the beginning of the 1st century a.D., roman structures were exhumed inside the tourist office building, that can be seen through a glass pavement.
